Transition Theory in Sustainability

The video, presented by Bas van Vliet, an Environmental Sociologist specializing in socio-technical environmental change and the management of sanitation, water, waste, and energy infrastructures, explains transitions in sustainability as significant societal shifts.

Bas van Vliet is also a Principal Investigator at the Amsterdam Institute of Advanced Metropolitan Solutions and has expertise in curriculum development for (Urban) Environmental Sciences. These environmental changes are driven by innovations emerging from protected “niches,” which disrupt established systems like fossil fuel-based energy and lead to new regimes. Transitions operate across three interconnected levels: niches (where innovations originate), regimes (existing systems), and landscapes (the broader context influencing change).
